The Coach’s Review and Feedback on TCB Weighted Balls.
This High School fastpitch softball season, The Coach used ORIGINAL Total Control Weighted Balls (generally called TCB Weighted Balls) for practice and pre-game warm-ups. These “squishy” training balls are filled with a sand-like substance.
TCB Weighted Balls are GREAT!!!

For Training – The ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Balls weigh 15oz as opposed to a regular softball that weighs 6.8oz. Because of the weight of the ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Balls, hitters naturally learn to increase their bat swing speed as they learn to “drive the ball“, ensuring a strong follow-thru. The result is greater hitting power. Also, the ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Balls are smaller – 3.2″ diameter compared to a regular softball at 3.8″ diameter – a bigger difference than you might think. This forces the hitter to increase their focus on the ball as they practice their hitting technique – instant feedback is provided as a “mis-hit” squishy ball only goes a few feet.
- Caution: When starting a hitting session with ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Balls, limit to 4 – 6 swings, gradually increasing to 18 – 24 swings per hitting session. Otherwise, hitters may sprain their wrists as they get use to hitting the heavier TCB Weighted Balls.
For Warm-ups or Practice: Because the TCB Weighted Balls are “squishy”, the balls don’t travel far. The Coach’s High School fastpitch team typically hit balls 20-30 feet. So you can have hitting practice in a small or confined area. They are great for pre-game on-the-field hitting warm-ups enabling your players to hit safely without “competing” for outfield area with the other team’s warm-ups. Or in small areas adjacent to the field. Or in the outfield while you’re having infield practice. Or indoors.
How The Coach uses the ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Balls: The Coach or one of his pitchers would stand 15-20 feet in front of the hitter, throwing the ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Ball like a fastpitch softball pitcher would pitch – only about low-to-mid speed. The Coach likes this better than just “soft toss” drills with the ORIGINAL TCB Weighted Balls as it better mimics the timing of the hitter to the pitch.
Review summary: The TCB Weighted Balls are an exceptional line of training balls that include weighted balls used for batting as well as wiffle-style ‘Hole’ balls.
The concept is the same for both – the balls ‘squish’ and change shape when you hit them, giving instant feedback and requiring the hitter to drive through the ball. Hitters and coaches love them because they don’t require a lot of space or a net, and because they are great at developing power and bat speed. TCB Weighted Balls are available in several sizes and weights.
- TCB Original: 15 oz, in between the size of a baseball and softball (3.2″ diameter)
- TCB Baseball: 15 oz, the size of a baseball (2.9″ diameter)
- TCB Atomic: 2 lbs, about the size of a cantaloupe (4.7″ diameter)
- TCB Hole Ball: in between the size of a baseball and softball (3.2″ diameter)
- TCB Mini-Hole Ball: the size of a golf ball
